3 guides from Panax Notoginseng on comparisons, each with the studies behind it.

Notoginseng vs American Ginseng

Notoginseng (sanqi) and American ginseng are different Panax species: one has the circulation and heart trials, the other blood sugar, memory and colds.

Key finding
“Panax notoginseng is a valuable traditional Chinese medical herb with multiple pharmacological effects.”

Wang et al., J Ethnopharmacol, 2016

Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng), the Chinese species called sanqi or tianqi, and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) share a genus and little else. Notoginseng is the root people take for circulation, platelets, bruises and recovery after a stroke. American ginseng is the root people take for after meal blood sugar, working memory and winter colds. This page sets the two side by side from the notoginseng side. Our sister site tells it from the American side in American ginseng vs notoginseng and covers that species at quinquefolius.com. The three way picture is in the three Panax species.

Notoginseng vs Korean Ginseng

Notoginseng (sanqi) and Korean ginseng are different Panax species: one has the circulation and stroke trials, the other fatigue and erectile function.

The Three Panax Species

Notoginseng, Korean ginseng and American ginseng are three Panax plants with three sets of trials. What each one is, who buys it, and which one you want.

Key finding
“The Panax L. genus is well-known for many positive physiological effects on humans, with major species including P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius, P. notoginseng, P. japonicus, and P. japonicus var. major, the first three of which are globally popular.”

Ji et al., Molecules, 2023

Three plants in the genus Panax account for almost all the ginseng sold in the world: notoginseng (Panax notoginseng), Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). They look alike and all make ginsenosides, and a lab can tell them apart by their saponin markers (Ji 2023). Their trials point to different uses. This page is the hub from the notoginseng side; the pairwise comparisons are notoginseng vs Korean ginseng and notoginseng vs American ginseng, and our sister site tells the same story from the American side in the three Panax species.
